Oscar Wilde in our Magma Languages Collection

Pierre Turcotte Éditeur

Pierre Turcotte Editor is pleased to announce the publication of the fifth issue of its Magma Languages Collection: The Star-Child / L'Enfant-Étoile by Oscar Wilde. This bilingual edition is aimed particularly at those learning foreign languages, in this case English or French, as well as literature lovers who wish to discover the work of this major English writer. New translation from English by Marie Dumont.

The Star-Child is a tale written by Oscar Wilde and forms part of his collection of tales A House of Pomagranates, published in 1891. This fairy tale tells the story of a child born from a star and gifted with incomparable beauty. But does beauty mean goodness? Taken care of by a woodcutter, the child grows up in adoration of his own splendour and develops a self-centered and cruel mind. Until one day, he is so obnoxious with his own mother that he is struck by a spell that makes him as ugly on the outside as he is on the inside. After that, in order to find his mother and get her forgiveness, he goes on a journey full of obstacles. Through this trip, he learns values such as respect towards nature, compassion and self-sacrifice. This tale offers an interesting reflection on the definition of beauty, one of Wilde’s favourite themes. The Star-Child is a perfect introduction for anyone who is interested in discovering the author’s universe, regardless of the age!
