Pierre Turcotte Editor is proud to announce the multilingual publication of the collection Hommage à Jusuf Vrioni by Albanian poet Mimoza Ahmeti.
This edition includes Mimoza Ahmeti's original poem in Albanian and translations into French, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Russian, Greek, and Chinese. It features a French introduction by Mimoza Ahmeti and a French afterword by Alfred Hasimja.
In Hommage à Jusuf Vrioni, Mimoza Ahmeti weaves an intimate yet historical portrait of a remarkable man: an aristocratic intellectual, a leading translator, a survivor of Albanian totalitarianism, and a paragon of politeness and elegance in the heart of a shattered world. Through the memory of their encounters, the author explores the divide between modernity and grace, between hard-won freedom and a language mutilated by ideology. The text unfolds as a poetic and political meditation on the loss of cultural continuity experienced by Albania in the aftermath of communism. Jusuf Vrioni appears not as a static monument, but as a living, contradictory, sometimes unsettling, and always profoundly human presence. In his presence, the narrator confronts her own ruptures: a body transformed into language, desire without tradition, and speech born of absence. Part poem, part narrative, part testimony, part elegy, and part act of transmission, Hommage à Jusuf Vrioni is also a reflection on exile, memory, and the survival of ancient forms of inner nobility in a world given over to amnesia and consumerism. Published in its original Albanian version and accompanied by translations in several languages, this work is intended for readers of contemporary poetry, European cultural history, and all those who seek, in literature, the fragile yet tenacious trace of an interrupted civilization.
Mimoza Ahmeti is a contemporary European poet originally from Albania. She earned a doctorate in psychotherapy from the SFU Vienna and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the SFU Paris. She works as a lecturer and researcher at the university. Since 2019, she has hosted a cultural program on national television. Her poetry received the Palme d'Or at the Sanremo Poetry Festival in 1998. She has been described as an enfant terrible by the Albanian scholar Robert Elsie. Mimoza Ahmeti has held several solo exhibitions of oil paintings and has released two albums of songs she composed and performed herself.
