"Shadow Stars" by Pierre Turcotte

Ten poems. No mouths, only bodies: a stomach that grinds every word, a heart wired at high speed to a restless brain, punctuation slipping out like sweat. Pierre Turcotte writes with muscle and viscera rather than argument—language stripped of its safety net, left raw and staggering. A sister slams a door. A father goes missing from memory's edges. A waiter drifts through his shift, unseen. A reader, alone, argues quietly with his books. Out of these fragments rises something stranger than confession: constellations drawn from absence, shadows bright enough to navigate by. Sparse, unpunctuated, and unflinching, Shadow Stars refuses easy comfort—no tidy syntax, no reassuring meaning—offering instead the vertigo of a mind caught between digestion and discourse, body and language, darkness and light. A rare, necessary poetry: not to be read so much as weathered, like a storm that leaves you changed.
Pierre Turcotte, a native of Canada, has lived in Málaga, Spain, since 2016. He earned a master's degree in Literary Studies from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in 1999. He is the founder of the digital, multilingual publishing house Pierre Turcotte Éditeur. He is the author of the poetry collections Totem salutaire (Éditions Mikanda, France's Prix Youve du Jury 2021), Finesse du sable (Éditions Takaba), Patience en berne (Éditions Milot), Arithmétique du soleil (Éditions Colline inspirée), Alexiques and Alexiques II (Éditions Line Mc Murray), as well as Calme brûlant, Étoiles d'ombre, and Là où je t'inviterai (Pierre Turcotte Éditeur). His work has been published in Canada, France, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mali. He has also published two plays, Les mandés (a finalist for the 2022 Prix MILA du Livre Francophone) and Psychopathologie d'un héros (Éditions Milot). Several of his works have been translated and published in English and Russian. In his poetic practice, he seeks to trace the human trajectory within the world of ordinary, everyday things, along with the sensations that make human beings permeable and creative. His poetry—intimate and grounded in daily life—maps a fragmented living space that opens dialogues with romantic dependency and the inescapability of death.
