“Conquered by Fog” by Fabiana Elisa Martínez is an anthology of twelve fictional stories. Each one has a sense of profundity and ends with an epiphany for its protagonist. The stories range greatly, from a young boy stealing admiring glances at a bibliophile to the revelation of simultaneous warmth and pain brought to a bitter old man’s brittle hand, which can only be found by holding his grandchild’s small one. Throughout many of these stories, author Fabiana Elisa Martínez plays with love and lust. She has a talent for making the simple into something profound and meaningful; that much is evident. And there is something almost poetic in many of these stories. The stories are very brief, and therefore the time that the reader spends with the characters is, too. Yet readers will find that certain characters will linger with them long after they have finished reading. When a book is well written, has great subject matter, and has a great cover, it all works together to make one beautiful piece of art. This does not matter to everyone, but for those of us who like to savor the whole experience of a book, from the cover and binding to the first and last pages, it certainly does. The cover image of a statue whose enigmatic gaze seems to bore into its viewer is compelling. The strongest connection I can make to it is that the contents of each story seem to bare the soul of its subject, and the statue seems to do similarly by peering into the soul of its viewer, or perhaps the statue’s foggy eyes are supposed to give reference to the book’s title. There is an ever-present theme of the unknown and the unpredictable. Just like fog, which obscures vision, each story unravels layers of hidden emotions and concealed truths, suggesting life’s unpredictability, where answers often emerge from the murkiest of situations. Overall, this is an interesting read for those who like fiction that makes them think or feel something. These are stories that should not be rushed through but slowly relished.
